Rocks or Blocks? The Better Solution For Containment Basin Systems

The basin of a vanishing waterfall must be designed to hold 3 times the amount of "water in transit". Water in transit is the the amount of water in the waterfall and stream at any given time. For example, a 24" wide waterfall flowing into a 3' wide stream, 15' long, with an average depth of 2" has a total of 56 gallons of water in transit at any given time. A properly sized basin will hold 3 times that amount or 168 gallons of water.

Do The Math

A 1 cubic foot container holds 7.48 gallons of water. The basin for the example water feature requires 22.5 cubic feet of water storing capacity to function properly.

The Block Method The Rock Method  Basin Size = 30 Cubic Feet Basin Size = 75 Cubic Feet The preferred method for constructing vanishing waterfall basins is to use Eco-Blox water matrix blocks to create the underground voids needed to hold water. The Matrix Block has sturdy, load-bearing design capable of supporting any rocks or structure built on or over the basin. They store 6.5 gallons of water per cubic foot. The old method for constructing vanishing waterfall basins involves digging a hole... and then filling it back up with rocks! The method relies on the air voids around the rocks to hold water. This creates a very inefficient water basin. A rocked basin holds 2.2 - 2.4 gallons of water per cubic foot.            Add it all up! Using Eco-Blox water matrix blocks to a build your water containment basin requires a smaller basin. And a smaller basin means less liner and underlayment, less time and expense digging and, in many cases, a lower finished project cost.
